Mixed Reality

Simulation For The
Most Realistic
Driver Training

IMMERSIVE LEARNINGIS4 X FASTER.

Highways England is always in need of training solutions that best prepare officers for what they might encounter from animal handling to customer satisfaction.

In the past, Highways England used conventional driving simulation, classroom education, and time on actual, albeit private, roadways. Under the guidance of Traffic Officer Trainers, they typically practised basic manoeuvres and processes.

Using our Mixed Reality simulator we provide the opportunity to immerse trainees in an unlimited number of super-realistic scenarios.

FEATURED TECHNOLOGIES:

  • Mixed Reality
  • Motion Rig
  • Immersive Sound
  • Road Editor

IMMERSIVE LEARNERS ARE 4X FASTER TO TRAIN THAN IN THE CLASSROOM setting.

key aspects of mixed reality training

Rather than building individual training simulations for individual scenarios, MXT utilized the Varjo XR-3Mixed Reality headset, which offers unparalleled functionality in areas fundamental to the success of such a solution.

The key attributes of the simulator platform are:

Mixed Reality Varjo XR-3 headset

This enables the user to see their passenger, their vehicle, themselves in the real world. When the user looks at the (CGI) rearview mirrors of the vehicle they see a totally accurate reflection.

ROAD EDITOR

MXT have created a road editor system. Using this system the user can choose a section of road, from anywhere in the world. We can very quickly render it into the MR simulation.

motion platform

MXT worked with Motion Systems (motionsystems.eu) to build a motion platform on to which we have bolted the seat of a Land Rover Discovery since this is one of the vehicles that Traffic Officers use.

TRAFFIC SYSTEM

The user can choose the traffic flow from any time of day and any day (or night) of the year for their road section. We draw from open source traffic data and in real-time drop it into the simulation.

Environment tool

We created a comprehensive list of environmental assets in order to quickly sculpt an urban, semi-urban, or rural environment.

Our driving simulator isa super-realistic training tool with the flexibility to be pieced together in a way that best suits the required user experience day-to-day. Different road layouts, environments, times of day, traffic flow and roadside assets can all be chosen by the user and are realistic to the chosen location. There is a real sense of presence between the real and the simulated world for the user. Changes also can be made on the fly from roadside signage to on-road cones, which can be evaluated using the data collection built into the Varjo headset.

The input of those involved in the training goes hand in hand with the technology. MXT worked very closely with the Traffic Officer trainers to understand what works best during training to ensure the realism of the simulator. Details are critical to the success of such a system and these can only be understood by the people that do the work every day.
