MXT IS YOUR ONE-STOP SHOP FOR VR AND MIXED REALITY

Our three main areas of expertise are creating realistic, immersive simulations for virtual on-the-job training; live simulators for responsive traffic flow, transport modelling, operations planning, and landscape and infrastructure visualisation; and extensive types of virtual and mixed reality on-the-job training for emergency services personnel.

EDUCATION

AND TRAINING

Immersive learners are 275% more confident to apply the skills they have learned over classroom and e-learning. We have built very effective experiences for learning and practising key skills such as customer service, empathy training, workplace welfare, and animal behaviour.

We’ve had incredible success training Traffic Officers on how to best work with people in vulnerable positions, such as a disabled driver broken down on the road, with extremely detailed simulations closely resembling experiences an officer might encounter on the job. Based on real-life stories from experienced officers, we used motion capture and voiceover actors to maximise realism, and dialogue trees to represent possible real-life conversations between the trainee and a CGI subject.

This empathy teaches officers in how to employ empathetic approaches when working with road users this has been shown to lead to far better outcomes for both parties. These simulations are the next generation of role-playing training for interpersonal skills. Not only are they more detailed and accurate than traditional role-play training scenarios, but they’re also endlessly customizable and repeatable at scale.

Other examples include Workplace Welfare, an office training simulation in spotting slip, trip, and fall hazards, as well as potential mental health issues; and Animal Behaviour, a simulation training in how to deal with different types of animals in distress. The kind of learning and growth that used to only be possible with many years of on-the-job experience is now available for anyone, as much as needed, in a safe and risk-free environment.

Our applications can train people on processes, equipment, and techniques. A trainer can use the immersive experience as part of their toolkit. For example, trainers can build experiences on the fly, from their trainer terminal, or join their trainees inside the simulation itself for additional control and personal interaction. The applications are countless, and the results speak for themselves.

IMMERSIVE

SPACES

275% more confident

40% improvement over classroom learning

35% over E-learning

We build immersive spaces for a variety of applications, providing users with the freedom to safely roam the entire space. These can be very effective training centres for conducting exercises, training scenarios, and other simulations, closely approximating real-world training.
Our most advanced of these is a 500m2 space near Derby, where multiple trainees can walk around in the same simulation at once. A trainer can control the simulated environment from their trainer terminal, and can also join the simulation with their trainees.

Immersive

Simulators

Many of our experiences could be classified as “Simulations”, which simulate an experience for the user, but we also build simulators, which are live models of complex real-world systems. We have live real-world solutions for Mixed Reality driving simulation, traffic flow and management simulation, and road layout simulation.

Any stretch of road in the world can be modelled through our road editor for rapid testing and evaluation, making it easier to evaluate how changes to a system would affect the system as a whole. Construction projects can also be modelled and created as immersive free-to-roam simulations, as in our Stonehenge project.

Human Experience

Evaluation

We study the human experience both inside and outside immersive simulations. Our application of eye tracking technology, for instance, can be used in tandem with biometric data collection to offer an empirical understanding of the human experience. Eye tracking can be used to evaluate new road assets, bridges, signage and more.

Understanding the effect on road user behaviour is a critical step in developing plans for effective road construction projects. Eye-tracking technology can also be used to evaluate line-of-sight in a stadium, understanding the impact of various design choices on user experience, operations planning, and emergency scenario planning. There are numerous ways this technology can help at every step of the process.

We can help you to structure research experimentation with baseline studies to collect and analyse data, in order to help you make evaluated decisions based on actual human experience.

IMMERSIVE

SPACES

We build immersive spaces for a multitude of applications that provide users with the freedom to safely roam the entire space. These can be very effective training centres where exercises, scenarios, and other simulations can be conducted without the confines of small rooms. They provide the capability to physically walk around the space, and with an enhanced sense of scale.

The most advanced of these that we have built is a 500m2 space near Derby. Multiple trainees can walk around in the same simulation. A trainer can control the simulated environment from their trainer terminal and can also be present in the same simulated environment as their trainees. Find out more.

Innovation
and Training Centre

People whose job has them working in dangerous environments arguably are the most in need of thorough high-quality training. However, this is the hardest training to deliver without actually exposing the trainees to that danger and putting them at risk during their training.

Work-related injury and illness, including mental health issues such as work-related stress and depression, can cause very serious problems for workers as well as colleagues, employers, and the broader economy.

TRAINING
Simulation as "Immersive Theatre"

Role-play is a common training tool that has proven more memorable and effective than traditional classroom or E-learning content alone. Active participation in training leads to better outcomes, and it’s become more widely used as a result. Common examples include first aid training, job interviews, phone conversations, and booking a hotel (a classic scenario when learning a foreign language!)

TRAINING
through Empathy

Customer satisfaction is a key priority for National Highways and is measured through the National Road Users Satisfaction Survey (NRUSS). The overall service provided by the organisation runs at around a 90% satisfaction rate, but they are constantly looking for ways to improve further.

Mixed Reality
Simulation for training and research

All new National Highways Traffic Officer recruits undergo thorough training, in all aspects of their new role, ranging from animal handling to customer satisfaction. Since the Traffic Officers spend a large part of their working day patrolling the road network, National Highways is always looking for the most effective training solutions that best prepare officers for any situation.
